Tab

The app for those who are bad at math, but constantly find themselves tasked with the job of splitting the group tab.

Tab: The simple bill splitter – bring10, LLC

I first encountered this app when I was splitting an extremely large bill at Din Tai Fung. Our group was quite large and ordered a lot of small dishes to share, making the job of splitting the bill evenly that much harder. Seeing me struggle, my friend asked if I had ever used the app “Tab”. Confounded, I said no and he demonstrated the app and how it worked to me. Needless to say, my life and future dining experiences were changed forever.

What the app does is it essentially takes a picture of your receipt and ‘reads’ the menu items, as well as the tax included in the price.

You designate who got what items (or if you split the items), and it lists out the names of your group alongside the items and total price they pay.

If you log into the app, you can save your bills to look back on, but I prefer to just use it to split bills (I have another app for tracking spending).

As a person who loves to share meals with friends and constantly dines at family-style establishments, this has saved me so much time in calculating who owes who money when it comes to splitting the bill. Rather than write it out or put it into an excel sheet to calculate the costs, this app conveniently covers everything and is also extremely easy to use. Although the accuracy might be off sometimes (misreading of the items or prices), it has made my life more convenient when it comes to dining with friends. Also fuels my need to not do anything math-related for the rest of my life.
